How to Juice for Smoothies

While many people enjoy juice and consider it a healthy alternative to soda pop and other sugar-laden beverages, even natural juice has its problems. Because juice contains natural sugars, it can lead to tooth decay, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. Drinking juice can also satisfy hunger and lead people to skip eating other nourishing foods. If you make your own fresh juice with a juicer, you can then use the juice to make delicious and nutritious smoothies.

Wash the fruit you wish to juice. Most juicers can handle the cores of fruit; however, you must remove pits, stems and citrus peels. Trim the tops and bottoms off carrots and cut open a watermelon to juice these foods.

Step 1

Process almost any combination of fruits and vegetables for juicing. A tasty combination for smoothies includes apples, oranges, carrots, grapes and watermelon. Use one apple, orange and carrot. Add a handful of grapes and a large wedge of watermelon to make approximately one to two cups of fresh juice.

Step 2

Pour the fresh juice into the blender. Peel the bananas and add them to the blender. Pour the milk into the blender and add the ice cubes.

Step 3

Process the smoothie ingredients for about 30 seconds -- until the ice cubes puree smoothly and the smoothie looks thick and creamy.

Step 4

Pour the smoothie into the glasses and serve it immediately with spoons and straws.
